Successful Thanksgiving Launch Day Despite Someone Destroying His Level 1 Rocket. . . Again!

Mylan Park, Morgantown, WV, November 29, 2014 (ghostwritten by Mark Suder from an email by Todd Ensign) - Today was another huge success for the WVRock club with about a dozen launches by two TARC teams, coach Chris Tennant, Ricky Beamer and Todd Ensign.  Ricky earned special recognition for having the only turkey-themed rocket while Chris easily won for building and launching the most rockets by far including a Christmas rocket that won the beauty contest, but not the stability contest.

Both WVU Physics TARC teams launched but unfortunately Team 1 lost last year's rocket in a high tree (the Holtzers found the rocket after everyone left, but it is stuck quite well).  Team 2 ran a couple of test launches with their 3D printed HAWK and then shot off what may be the first qualifier for the season earning a great score of 25.  Nice work Gabe, Kemp, and Caroline!

Alas, I (Todd) rebuilt my level 1 bigger and better than the last time I failed... only to learn the hard way that by adding several feet to the 4" diameter body tube, I created too much volume to pressurize and effectively eject parachutes (without additional black powder).  Want to know what a 4' long PVC pipe looks like after smashing into the dirt at 400 mph?  Lots of little pieces, that's what.  ;-)  BUT, I have already re-buit the rocket this evening, but this time it is a mere 2' long and I plan to try again on Dec. 13.

Anyone interested can join us at the next club business meeting on Monday, December 8, 2014, or the special December launch date of Saturday, December 13, 2014, at Mylan Park.
